A few months back out of curiosity, they reached out to their current insurance company’s 1-800 number to ask a question about recent storm damage from Hurricane Helene. There was no claim filed, no payout received, and certainly no resolution — just an innocent inquiry about potential options. Unfortunately, that call was tagged as a “zero-dollar claim” in their file, which then went on their record as if it were an actual insurance claim.

This “claim” (which wasn’t really a claim at all) became a major hurdle. Multiple insurance carriers denied them coverage for their new home. It caused unnecessary stress, delays, and complications they weren’t prepared for.

Here’s the kicker: all of this could have been avoided. If they had reached out to a trusted professional—someone who knew their situation and could provide the right guidance—they would’ve received advice that protected them from this unintended consequence.

Right thought. Wrong execution. And it came at a cost.
